The Blog to Transform Advanced Care

Advancing Care through Innovation, Observation and Collaboration.

Earlier today, it was announced that palliative care entrepreneur Brad Smith will serve as the next Director of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI), as well as the Senior Advisor for Value-Based Transformation to HHS Secretary Alex Azar.

Smith most recently served as Chief Operating Officer of Anthem’s Diversified Business Group and was previously CEO of Aspire Health, the nation’s largest provider of community-based palliative care services, which he co-founded with Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, MD (R-TN).

Smith has long been a close partner of C-TAC and has demonstrated a strong commitment to developing innovative serious illness models for the most vulnerable patients and families. C-TAC is proud to count Anthem and Aspire Health as valued members.

“We are thrilled that Brad Smith, a steadfast advocate for value-based, person-centered care, will serve as the next head of CMMI,” said C-TAC Co-Founder and Co-Chair Tom Koutsoumpas. “Brad has been a tremendous friend and ally, working hand-in-hand with C-TAC and creating transformative care models designed to support people with serious illness. We congratulate Brad on this exciting new chapter and applaud CMMI for their continued leadership and support for serious illness care. Brad will be an extraordinarily effective leader and have a major impact on the future of our nation’s health care.”

C-TAC looks forward to continuing to work alongside CMMI to ensure that those living with advanced illness receive comprehensive, high-quality, person- and family-centered care that is consistent with their goals and values and honors their dignity.
