The Blog to Transform Advanced Care
Advancing Care through Innovation, Observation and Collaboration.
The newest advance care planning courses for physicians, developed by Respecting Choices®, a division of C-TAC Innovations, is now available via the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) learning management system (LMS). The online version of the course will also be available to C-TAC members at a 50% discount for a limited time.
The program is available to CAPC members, which includes over 1,400 health organizations, including health systems, hospitals, hospices, home health agencies, medical groups, and health plans.
The curriculum, “Building Physician Skills in Basic Advance Care Planning (ACP),” consists of three courses, which are designed to enhance the skills to introduce basic ACP, guide and document conversations, and successfully integrate and bill for ACP in everyday practice.
This collaborative effort comes at a critical point in advance care planning, an area in which there is a dire need for physician training. In a 2019 article published by the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, CAPC founder and director, Diane Meier, MD, and her co-authors estimated that more than 219,000 physicians and advance practice providers could benefit from clinician communication training.
“CAPC is proud to partner with Respecting Choices® to offer these innovative and invaluable advance care planning courses for physicians,” said Dr. Meier. “This is a major step toward growing the number of physicians who are trained to guide patients through these important conversations.”
A 2018 C-TAC analysis shows that the use of advance care planning billing codes is on the rise, with claims increasing by 75% between 2016 and 2017. This increased demand can only be met by building a workforce of clinicians who are trained in leading these discussions with patients.
“Guiding clinicians toward person-centered care is central to the mission of Respecting Choices,” said Respecting Choices® Executive Director Stephanie Anderson, DNP, RN. “This project, funded through the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, allows these curricula to reach a wider audience of physicians who can benefit from advance care planning training.”
Respecting Choices® offers two programs that support person-centered decision making (Advance Care Planning and Shared Decision Making in Serious Illness) which include on-line and in-person educational curricula, as well as guidance on designing systems for implementing change throughout organizations and communities.
