C-TAC Chief Medical Officer Brad Stuart, MD, recently spoke with Hospice News about the opportunities available for palliative care under the Primary Care First Initiative, announced by CMS in April.

Reporter Jim Parker wrote that providers participating in the initiative would receive a bonus for reducing avoidable hospitalizations, an area in which community-based palliative providers have proven success.

“That’s where I think the opportunity lies,” said Dr. Stuart. “You can really score a large increase if you achieve certain metrics that CMS has already specified. There is only one metric in year one, and that is you have to reduce avoidable hospitalizations.”
